[Movies] Romero’s New Zombie Flick Gets Named
Posted by Larry Csonka on 07.21.2009

George A. Romero announced today that the title of his latest film would be George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead. Production for the film started late last year. The debut of the film will take place at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the celebrated "Midnight Madness" series. That event spotlights the ten best new horror films from around the world. International Programmer, Colin Geddes, had the following to say on bringing the film to the Toronto Festival…

"We're overjoyed to welcome George back into the dark hallowed halls of Midnight Madness. And on a personal note, it's a thrill for my inner ten-year-old, who rolled pennies to buy a VHS copy of Night of the Living Dead."

Romero also commented on the film's status…

"We're in the final stages of post-production and it's great to come up for air and find out the film's been chosen to appear at the Festival. It's just a terrific honor."

George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead will follow a war-weary band of soldiers. They get lured to a remote island, one that promises to be the last paradise on earth. Eventually they discover that even in paradise, there is no escape from the appetites of either the living or the dead.

well I'm game.

I just hope this one actually plays at my theater unlike Diary

The fact that Diary didn't play at your theater was God doing you a favor.

Miracles do happen, xLx. They really do.

I gotta agree. Diary was the one and only Living Dead flick that I hated. You actually want to zombies to kill everyone in that one.

Agreed--Diary was a huge misstep for Romero.

I liked Diary of the Dead, hopefully this one is just as good.

How original!! Can this guy do anything else. I mean how many of these damn movies will he make??

Yup, I agree too...Diary was a very forgettable and weak movie. Land wasn't great, but was pretty good. Diary felt cheap and poorly thought out. The biggest problem was the expected Romero social commentary was way overstated. The characters keep on babbling about important it is to get the truth out to the world via the net and vid, while others say how our love of media violence is a bad thing. Theres nothing subtle in Diary or thoughtprovoking in Diary, and the zombie scenes are lackluster.

Uh, did you guys miss the point, or what? The Dead movies have never been about likable characters as much as showing the darker side of humanity, and Diary did that perfectly. It showed how advancing "instant media" (ie; YouTube and the like) that allow anyone to become a journalist only brings out society's inherent narcissism and voyeurism. The characters were, for the most part, meant to be almost wholly unlikable, not unlike everyone but Ben and Barbara in the original Night.

The characters weren't unlikable because they were supposed to be written as such. They were unliked because they sucked all kinds of ass as actors. I LOVE Romero's films, but Diary was by far the weakest.

Yep I got the point of the movie, I just didn't car for it as much as his other Dead movies. I do need to give it a second look though, as I didn't care for Land of the Dead much the first time I saw it, but loved on my second viewing.

Yeah! What an unoriginal HACK that Romero is! Why can't he be like Broccoli and only make one James Bond movie and move on?

How about this for an answer... he's the only one that can make these cannibal zombie/ghoul movies intersting. No one other than Romero has ever made a zombie flick worth a damn EVER except "Shaun of the Dead". Not the shitty running zombies. Not the shitty 28 days/weeks/months/years/decades later garbage. Not the shitty Italian junk. Not the shitty video game flicks. Not that shitty Nazi zombie movie everyone's jerking off about lately. NOTHING!

If you can't enjoy Romero for waht he does, then go watch something else fucksack.
